Chekhov’s Theatre of Dreams1 x 30'
Broadcast to commemorate the centenary of the death of the great Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov , Sir Richard Eyre explores the Moscow Art Theatre, with which he was so closely associated. This theatre is one of the great cultural institutions of Europe and its history is a microcosm of the history of the Russian State. Eyre traces the theatre from its origins at a lunch in a Moscow restaurant when the director Konstantin Stanislavsky and the playwright Vladimir Nemirovich Danchenko came up with the idea. They were still at the table at breakfast time the next day and their plans for the theatre were more or less complete. They opened with a production of Chekhov’s “Seagull” and the rest is history.
